His very first pet was a baby bunny. A surprise birthday gift from his parents at ten years old. She was shown to young Benny as the rabbit sat in it's cage on the outdoor terrace. It was twenty floors up on the condo apartments complex in the Bronx. The timing was perfect as it was early June with the rest of the summer ahead. Benny fed her and gave fresh water every day as the love between them grew. She would scoot around the cage when he came out, knowing that he would let her out to play. In the evenings he would put a light blanket over the cage which helped her to fall asleep. The cage was moved into Benny's room during the cold winter months. He often unlatched the door as she hopped onto his bed and cuddled with him until they both fell asleep. There wasn't one night no matter what time of year it was that he didn't kiss her goodnight. Twenty year old Benny went out on the terrace but his bunny rabbit lay still on its back in the cage. Without waking up his parents, he carried his beloved pet which was wrapped in a towel to the elevator. In a garden down there, he buried the bunny, said a prayer, and cried for quite a while before going back home. Mom and dad hugged their son after he had told them the sad news. They also cried as the loss was shared by their love for a baby bunny. Five years later he was about to move out and get his own apartment. The night before the move, he thought he heard the terrace door open. Then the pitter patter of tiny feet scurrying towards his room. A pressure was felt on his bed right next to him. Then then the warmth of fur against his cheek. Benny smiled as he rested his arm over a familiar presence. A kiss goodnight was exchanged...Maybe love is never really gone, just temporarily lost. It happens between people and even pets. Case in point in a short love story between a young boy and his pet bunny....
